How is your grass?
With ample rain this summer most home lawns are looking green and healthy but a wet fall in 2016 and above average rain this year many lawns are having weed problems with clover, dandelion and the worst weed of all… crabgrass.
If you want your lawn to look better this fall and in spring I would suggest 3 things.
- Apply or have applied a 3-way herbicide in mid to late September to take care of the clover and dandelion this fall and you will have very little in spring.
- For the crabgrass (that thick bladed light green grass that came up in late June or early July) there is little to be done now as its life is almost over. Next year you will want to apply or have applied a preventative herbicide to “prevent” crabgrass from coming up.
- I still see lawns mowed to short. Home lawns perform best when mowed at 2.5 to 3 inches. At this height the grass is healthier and will reduce weed germination.
As a bonus if you really want to spruce up the lawn a good fertilizer application around Labor Day will strengthen the plant and roots before winter.
Happy mowing!
